I have already taken a look at sahaugins and kobolds across mutliple storylines, so today I wanted to take a glance at another commonly occurring monster/mob in Ebberron, the ogre. For the most part, I can see different delineations between the various ogre groups that occur across the different story lines in DDO. However, there is one storyline where the ogres that appear in them seem to be linked. First off let me list the general story lines that ogres seem to appear in (probably not an exhaustive list but gives the general idea):
Different types of ogres in DDO. (Screenshots courtesy of DDOwiki).
Looking at the above list seems to give us some indication that the majority of the ogres are not affiliated with each other. In many of the lower lever quests, it appears that the ogres are either hired hands/mercenaries or have become brutish leaders of weaker monsters.
It isn’t until we reach the ogres of Sorrowdusk Isle before we reach a significant organized clan. The Grey Moon ogres are a strong and old clan that is undergoing a little rebellion. While questing through this storyline, we learn that the usurper of the clan has started an alliance with some trolls and has used their strength to claim power. But I’m also thinking that usurper might also be gathering some strength from a secondary ogre clan. While questing through the Grey Moon quest string, we battle some “Black sun ogres“. I haven’t been able to figure out whether this is the case or not, as their isn’t a reference at all to the black sun ogres in the storyline for Grey Moon or for any other storyline. I tried a quick and dirty Google search for black sun ogres in Ebberron and only came across the DDOwiki entries. So my initial thinking is that this is another competing clan, possibly located on another isle, that also joined up with the usurper and the trolls. Not entirely sure, but I would like to know a little more about this particular case.
The next set ogres we run across are the Runetusk ogres. These ogres are found in two sets of storylines: The Restless Isles and Gianthold. The ogres in these two locations are most likely tied to each other but the exact linkage is a little vague. The Runetusk ogres out in the Restless Isles are helping the mindflayers undercover some of the ancient powers of the Quori which leads us to the warforged titan. The Quori used this ancient power against the ancient giant civilization lead by the Stormreaver. Of course the Stormreaver is tied to Gianthold and we have Runetusk ogres as part of the Stormheart Brigade in support of the Stormreaver. So the Runetusk ogres are some how connected, but that link is still a little unclear to me. It is also interesting to note, that their are sides quests in the Stormheart Brigade encampment for the trolls and minotaurs but not the ogres. I wonder why…
The ogres of the forces of Droamm are not linked to these other groups or clans at all. These ogres became elite vanguard of the Green Hags known as the Daughters of Sora Kell. I don’t see, or can’t determine any links between these forces and the other ogres we encounter in Xen’drick.
The last tribe/group of ogres we come across are those from the Vale of Twilight. The Kar-Thul ogres appear to be aligned with the rakshasas out in the Vale. I’m not quite sure how this alliance works, but we know that the Kar-Thul ogres are trying to help free one of the Lords of Dust when we run the quest Let Sleeping Dust Lie. However, there is no other mention of them in the other quests or the rest of the storyline concerning the Shroud.
I wonder if these story lines will be explored any further later in the future?
