The Vagueness in the Quest Rest for the Restless

As I was taking Erdrique (Level 6 Monk) through his level 4 quests over the weekend, I decided to run the Rest for the Restless.  Just to give some quick background on this quest, the quest giver is Lady Nepenthe who is located in the Bogwater Tavern in the House Phiarlan Ward.  Lady Nepenthe tells you that she was involved some with evil associates in the past and made a pilgrimage to Stormreach to end that old life and start a new one.  Her son decided to do the same thing, leaving their old associated behind to start anew with her in Stormreach.  However, these associates sabotaged her son’s airship and now has him guarding their vault in Stormreach as an undead servant.  She asks you to do what you can to put his soul to rest.

Now I have to admit, I never really gave much thought to the storyline here.  I just realized that some quick and nasty necromancy was used to torment a poor soul and that the soul just needed to be put to rest.  However, the more I think about his now, the more I realize how vague this particular situation is.  Who exactly was Lady Nepenthe and her son involved with?  How were they involved?  If Lady Nepenthe and her son were trying to disassociate themselves from their past, why did they come to Stormreach where evidently their associates had established some type of presence?  What did they do for these associates?  Why did these associates even care about them?  What is her son’s name?

There are too many questions here to try to figure out what is really going on.  Once we complete the quest, Lady Nepenthe lets you know that she and her son were working for the Blood of Vol.  This explains why all of the enemies we encounter in the Vault of the Restless were undead minions (skeletons, zombies, wights, and ghasts) and why Nepenthe’s son was raised from dead.  However, why did the Blood of Vol care about Nepenthe or son?  I’m thinking that Nepenthe and her son may have been involved in espionage for the Blood of Vol.  Working in some aspect to gather information that could be used by the cult against others or to help gather information that could be used to enhance the influence of the Blood of Vol.  Another aspect could be that Lady Nepenthe and her son were important in gathering supplies or magical artifacts for the cult.  Or perhaps, the Blood of Vol is just that vindictive and they wanted to use Lady Nepenthe and her son as an example of what happens when somebody tries to double cross them.

The Vault of the Restless is full of the undead.

Lady Nepenthe also passes on that their old associates raised her son from the grave in order for him to protect their “trinkets.”  What trinkets was he supposed to be protecting?  The Vault of the Restless is actually not very vault like at all.  There is only one chest, and it is guarded by Lady Nepenthe’s son.  The only other items in the “vault” are a series of books and tomes.  Are these the trinkets that are worth protecting?

A lot of questions still abound when it comes to Lady Nepenthe and her son and the quest Rest for the Restless.  Then again, it just lets us create theories as to why the events have happened the way they have :).  Thanks for reading everybody and happy hunting!!
