Ambush with Real Loot?

While taking Containment (Level 7 Cleric) and Cannock (Level 8 Druid) through the Cloven Jaw Scourge: Blockade, I had a random thought.  It occurred to me while I was preparing to loot the chest that sets off the ambush.  I wondered, why is there real loot in the chest?

I know that we have kobolds that are inhabiting this part of the Steam Tunnels but I know they are smart enough not to leave gold and magical items inside a chest that they are using to lure adventurers into a trap.  Just coming down the tunnel to the chest, adventurers can’t tell what is inside the chest.  The only thing we see is this tempting looking treasure chest which could contain just about anything.  I wonder why the kobolds just didn’t through into the chest a lump of rotten and spoiled food or some dirty and scummy rocks into the treasure chest.  I mean they were smart enough to set up an ambush in The Butcher’s Path without even using a chest (of course it was behind a hidden door…how do you ambush somebody who can’t find the entrance?).

Well, I guess the real thing to remember here is that they are kobolds.  Perhaps the kobolds were tricked by somebody else to store actual loot in the chest while using it as bait.  I can see somebody inflating their ego to the point where they would believe they could easily defeat anybody stupid enough to spring the ambush so why not use the same treasure chest as a lure and as an actual place to store some items.  They are pretty gullible!!  Now, who would do such a thing…

Thanks for reading everybody and happy hunting in Shan-to-Kor!!
