Preliminary Thoughts on Night Revel Key Drops

Since the Night Revels has been open, I have been taking various characters through Delera’s Graveyard to obtain keys.  Since I like to switch up my character runs daily, I seemed to recognize that some characters picked up more keys than others. Of course this was just pearly based on my subjective observations.  Looking back at my notes, here is what I recorded:

Erdrique (Level 16 Bard) and Sttollen (Level 17 Rogue) (I run these two together)-they picked up 11 keys so far.

Wapoyei (Level 24 Cleric/Unyielding Sentinel)-Picked up 1 key

Izmit (Level 15, Shardar-Ki)-Picked up 6 Keys

Burrlland (Level 15 Purple Dragon Knight)-Picked up 5 keys

Breyy (Level 7 Artificer)-Picked up 2 Keys

Now one thing you can definitely see is that during this past week or so, my quest runs have been primarily with characters in the level 15 to 17 range.  Since Erdrique and Sttollen I tend to play much more often, it makes sense that they have gathered more keys than my other characters.  However, I was surprised to see how many keys Izmit picked up.  I don’t play Izmit that often, but his two spiked chain attacks are quite effective in the graveyard.

ScreenShot00972.jpg

Izmit taking down some undead in the graveyard to get keys.

Now there are many different factors that can affect the drop rates for keys.  The number of monster spawns in the area, whether or not you are grouped in a party, if you are grouped in a party how big the the party is, how many monsters you or your party are killing, and the amount of time you spend running in the graveyard.  A better metric for this would have been to calculate a key per hour (or some other time amount to quantify effort) for each character and even taking into account your party size and monster kills.

Now for some of these runs I spent more time in the graveyard while others I spent more time in the Night Revel quests (since I just banked the keys I just switched them from character to another).  We still have another week with the Night Revels so I’ll be curious to see how many keys some of my other characters will pick up.  I’m my schedule holds true, I plan on running a few more lower level characters this week as well as some epic level characters along with Erdrique and Sttollen.

Thanks for reading everybody and happy hunting in the Night Revels!!

Who Controls the Night Revels?

The Night Revels is a popular event in DDO.  It occurs during the Halloween Season and takes place entirely in Delera’s Graveyard.  The event consists of undead constantly rising up from the grave in the graveyard looking to create havoc and destruction.  The event then culminates in the completion of a set of quests that allow you to gather ingredients to turn in for various awards.  With this current season’s festivities going on, I began to wonder something.  Who controls this source of undead revolt?  See, the event prior to this, Mabar Endless Night Festival, one could argue that Eternity, the terrible spectral dragon, was the cause of that scenario but what about here?

ScreenShot00973.jpg

Izmit battling in the minions of the Night Revels in Delera’s Graveyard.

Delera’s Graveyard is ripe for possibilities.  We have the necromancer Dreadlord Giddeon, the lich Validus, the necromancer Valak, and the mummy Saerik Vorculas.  And we probably shouldn’t limit the possibilities to those undead minions in Delera’s Graveyard.  I could easily see something like the Black Abbott or Lady Vol also being a source of this uprising.  However, I don’t believe this to be the case.  The current timing of the event corresponds to when Mabar is closely aligned with Stormreach.  This allows the undead to come out en masse and it also makes me wonder if somebody from the plane of Mabar is also the “leader” of this uprising.  I’m wondering if we still have another major enemy to worry about in the future.

ScreenShot00972.jpg

Taking on the undead in Delera’s Graveyard during the Night Revels.

I guess we’ll see what the future holds.  In either case, if I keep slaughtering the undead forces in the graveyard, perhaps a revelation will occur to me :).  Thanks for reading everybody and happy hunting in the Night Revels!!

Looking Back This Past Week, Quest Runs November 2nd to November 5th

This past week my quest runs were across a variety of levels and consisted of a number of slayer runs, adventures in the Night Revels, and regular questing.  I kicked things off by taking Rimuldar (Level 23 Wizard/Magister) out into the beautiful King’s Forest for my typical morning slayer run.  I’m going to have to print out a map of the King’s Forest and use it as a guide to find all of Elminster’s Messages so that I can get that completed, not only on Rimuldar but for all of my epic level characters as well.  During the afternoon, once I got back home from work, I took Erdrique (Level 22 Rogue/Fury of the Wild) out into The High Road and into the quest Rest Stop.  I found the quest Rest Stop pretty fun, particularly the location that it occurs in, a nice old crumbling castle.  Later that night, I had the opportunity to dual box once again.  I logged in with Crawlller (Level 7 Ranger) from my premium account and Cannock (Level 8 Druid) from my VIP account and I took them through the quest  The Sacred Helm on elite and then I took them both out into the Night Revels and completed the quests Haverdashed and Under New Ravagement on level 7.

Cannock and Crawlller work on completing Under New Ravagement.

Tuesday I started my questing out by taking Garrrin (Level 23 Barbarian/Fury of the Wild) out into the King’s Forest for some of his own slayers.  In the afternoon, I took Hamllin (Level 17 Fighter) into the Sands of Menechtarun for even more slayers and then I took him out into the Night Revels and attempted Under New Ravagement.  I’m not entirely sure why, but I am struggling with Hamllin in the Night Revels quests at level.  I need to take a look at him and figure out what the deal is.  Later on Tuesday night, I logged on with Larrs (Level 21 Bard/Fatesinger) and I took him into the quests The Last Stand and into Fathom the Depths on epic normal.  I also completed a run through the Night Revels and Under New Ravagement on level 21.  If you haven’t noticed I’m trying to get as many runs in with the Night Revels as I can.

Wednesday, as is typical, was a shorter day of questing because of my weekly date night.  I did some slayer runs that morning prior to work with Cannock (Level 8 Druid) and Containment (Level 7 Cleric).  This was another opportunity to do some dual boxing for me and I was also able to level Cannock up to 8.  I took them through the Waterworks, which was Cannock’s first venture down there.  My afternoon run was with Erdrique who went back into the High Road to run End of the Road.  I was a little surprised with this particular run. Up to this point, I didn’t find the High Road quests to hard with Erdrique on elite, although he is level 22 and these quests are level 20 on elite.  But this time, I ran into some trouble and wound up suffering a total wipe when I grabbed too many of the Netherese and their sellswords.  I’ll have to try to be a little more careful during my next run through.

To close the week out on Thursday, I started things out by taking Tuhnn (Level 15 Bladeforged) into the Sands of Menechtarun.  Tuhnn went off to hunt down some scorrow during this go round and hit the latest slayer mark.  In the afternoon, I logged on with Hamllin and took him for his turn into the desert, although he is working on his undead slayers.  I also took him into Under New Ravagement, once again, for some revenge and he barely made it through it (although I did completed it!!).  During the night, I was planning on logging in with Harrgon (Level 11 Favored Soul) and so I took the opportunity to dual box once again but also logging in with Suppply (Level 10 Paladin).  I took them both into Sorrowdusk Isle and completed the Iron Mines: Freeing Achka and Iron Mines: Justice for Gust.  I didn’t get a chance to take these two through the Night Revels though :(.

Suppply hunting down the ogres in Sorrowdusk Isle.

Harrgon hoping to find Achka in the Iron Mines.

Overall, it was a pretty nice mixture of questing.  I had some low level questing with Crawlller, Cannock, and Containment.  Some mid-level questing with Harrgon and Suppply and high level questing with Hamllin and Tuhnn.  I even had a good amount of epic questing with Erdrique, Larrs, Garrrin, and Rimuldar.  All of these included runs through slayers, quests, and the Night Revels.  I’m hoping for just as productive a weekend and I hope I will have enough ingredients to get those augments for Erdrique.  We’ll see!!  Thanks for reading everybody and happy hunting in the Night Revels this weekend!!

An Active Halloween Weekend, Quest Runs October 30th to November 1st

I always enjoy the Halloween holiday and this past weekend was no different.  I was a little bummed out that we couldn’t dress up at work on Friday, October 30th but I made up for it by dressing up on Halloween to pass out candy to the kids.  But another aspect I always enjoy with Halloween is playing DDO and slaying many monsters :).  This year was no different.  I kicked off the weekend by taking Berann (Level 9 Barbarian) out into Tangleroot Gorge for some slayers.  I also took the opportunity for Containment (Level 7 Cleric) to tag along with him by dual boxing with my two accounts.  After work, I logged on with Hamllin (Level 17 Fighter) and I took him out into the undead zone of the Sands of Menechtarun as he continues to work on his 1,500 slayer mark in that region.  I then took him out to Delera’s Graveyard and to participate in the Night Revels.  It took me about three minutes or so to accumulate two keys.  I used one to enter Haverdashed on level 20.  I was expecting it to pretty easy but I underestimated the ability of my hireling cleric and my lack luster damage output with piercing weapons and found myself a soul stone during the fight with the skeletons with my hireling quickly following suit.  However, I did find out that when you fail an instance a key is still consumed.  No worries though, I had my revenge :).  I then called it for a little while and then logged back on Friday night with Erdrique (Level 22 Rogue/Fury of the Wild).  I had originally planned on knocking out the quests in the High Road so I headed out there and completed Lost in the Swamp and A Stay at the Inn on heroic elite.  It was the first time I have done these quests and I found them interesting.  In between those runs, I also took Erdrique through a run of the Night Revels and Haverdashed and through a run of the Extraplanar Palace: Labor Shortage.  I called it a night after that.

Halloween was quite an interesting day, especially with my questing!!  I took as much opportunity as I could to do some challenge questing and Night Revels questing in between my chores and yard work.  The first thing I did was to log on with Hamllin so that he could get another shot at Haverdashed.  This time I went in on level 17 and switched weapons and had no major issues, so he got his revenge there.  After that, I logged on with Erdrique who then participated in the Night Revels as well and completed runs through Haverdashed, Kobodl’s Newest Ringleader, and Under New Ravagement.  I also had some time to complete two runs of the Extraplanar Palace: Dragon’s Hoard and a run through Dr. Rushmore’s Mansion: Picture Portals.  After the trick and treating, I logged back on Saturday night and I grouped up with Okhamel and took him through the Night Revels and through the Snitch and the Lich.  We then headed out to the Twelve to try the quest Terminal Delirium on heroic elite.  It was first look at the quests from the Heart of Madness quest series and all I can say is that it was an interesting experience.  We were in there for quite some time and when we completed it I needed to call it a night.  But I can say that we did completed it :).

On Sunday, I had hoped to log in during the day like I did on Saturday but unfortunately the opportunity didn’t arise.  I did log on that night though but I had made a mistake in my calendar.  I forgot to update my calendar and had logged on with Stoorage (Level 13 Fighter) but I was supposed to play with Cannock (Level 7 Druid).  I didn’t realize this mistake until this morning when I started to think about it more.  Oh well, in either case I played Stoorage and dual boxed him with Cantlin (Level 12 Sorcerer).  I also joined up with Twotoe.  Stoorage still needed the Necro I series on elite (he hadn’t started them yet) so we ran through all five quests on elite (Tomb of the Immortal Heart, Tomb of the Sanguine Heart, Tomb of the Burning Heart, Tomb of the Crimson Heart, and The Bloody Crypt).  Even being well over level, I still wound up getting enough experience to move Stoorage and Cantlin from level 12 to 13.  Now I will just have to remember to log on with Cannock during my next scheduled run with Stoorge to get back on track.  The dilemma of having a plethora of characters :).  While running through these quests, I ran into some internet connection issues and when we were more than halfway through the Bloody Crypt my connection dropped.  It took me about another 20 minutes (if not longer) to reconnect and luckily Twotoe stayed on and waited for me.  Definitely an interesting night.

So, the weekend was quite fun.  I ran a wide variety of quests ranging from some low level slayers, to the Night Revels, to challenges, and high level heroic quests.  I hope everybody else had a fun and safe weekend as well!!  Thank you for reading and happy hunting in the Night Revels.

Making Some Progress, Quest Runs October 23rd to October 25th

I had a pretty active weekend in DDO :).  Questing started out on Friday morning when I logged on with Larrs (Level 21 Bard/Fatesinger) and took him into the Ruins of Gianthold (Heroic) and accumulated my 1,500 slayer mark in the Stormfist zone.  Now that he has that, I think I will move him over to Eveningstar to start working out in the King’s Forest for awhile.  After I got back home from work, I logged on with Erdrique (Level 22 Rogue/Fury of the WIld) and tried to make my way through the quest Mask of Deception on heroic elite.  At the time I was trying it, I was level 21 and it was the first time I had seen this quest.  Needless to say, things didn’t quite work out so well which I commented on here.  So my afternoon run on Friday didn’t quite work out so well.  However, I logged back on with Erdrique on Friday night and took him back into the Mask of Deception.  I took a different tack this time and although I still had some problems with it, I was able to complete it.  I then took Erdrique through a run of the Lava Caves: Colossal Crystal to get some ingredients.  I actually took him through that challenge twice during the night.  The next quest I ran was Thorn and Paw on elite.  After I knocked that out, I decided to check out the Night Revels.  It didn’t take me long to get a key and I soon found myself heading into the quest Haverdashed and completing it.  I then called it a night (after I did some character maintenance on my other characters).

Saturday started out by logging back on with Erdrique and taking him back into the Night Revels before it was turned off, onice again taking advantage of the fact that I was able to quest between chores and yard work.  I was able to gather three keys and to knock out the other three quests: Kobold’s Newest Ringleader, Under New Ravagement, and The Snitch and the Lich.  Overall, I found the event quite fun and wrote about here.  I then took Erdrique through another run of the Lava Caves: Colossal Crystal and then through a two runs of the Extraplanar Palace: Labor Shortage.  Those were the runs I was able to complete throughout the day but I also knocked some quests out with Erdrique later that night.  After I logged back in, I then headed out to Eveningstar and completed the The Druid’s Curse on heroic elite to finish out that storyline (The Druid’s Deep).  After the Druid’s Curse was completed, I did another run through the Extraplanar Palace: Labor Shortage and then for a circuit through the Restless Isles slayer area.  I then decided to head out to the next set of level 17 quests I still have to complete on elite, Reaver’s Reach.  It has been a long time since I have been out to the Reaver’s Refuge so I was looking forward to running those quests once again.  I started out by taking Erdrique into Aussicraex’s Valley and running Prey on the Hunter.  It took me two runs but I completed it on elite.  To close out the night, I logged on with Tuhnn (Level 15 Bladeforged) and took advantage of the free feat respect that was being offered and got rid of Cleave (because he has Exalted Cleave) and picked up another feat in the two handed weapon line, I then called it at night (after more character maintenance).

In comparison to Friday and Saturday, my question on Sunday was very limited.  I didn’t get the opportunity this time to log in and quest throughout the day.  However, I was able to dual box with Stoorage (Level 12 Fighter) and Cantlin (Level 12 Sorcerer) and I used Cantlin to open up Under the Big Top on elite for Stoorage (who was previously working on the House P Carnival series through elite).  Cantlin, being on my VIP account, was able to ulnock the elite setting for Stoorage (who is on my premium account).  I did find it interesting that I came across a rare encounter in Under the Big Top that I hadn’t seen before, a tiefling named Maz’il’tilnik.  So that was quite interesting.  However, I didn’t have any major issues taking Stoorage through Under the Big Top on elite, but then again Stoorage was five level higher that CR level of the quest.  That was my last run for the weekend.

The questing over Friday through Sunday was quite numerous and quite fun.  I had good time with the Night Revels and completed another story arc just to start another.  We’ll see how Erdrique progresses through the rest of the Stormreaver’s Refuge.  Thanks for reading everybody and happy hunting in Reaver’s Reach!!

My First Look at the Night Revels

This weekend, the DDO developers at Turbine gave us a first “live” look at the Night Revels.  The new Halloween event was turned on for the live servers during Friday (October 23rd) and ran through Saturday morning to around 10 am or so.  While it was turned on, I had the opportunity to take a quick look at it.  Like the old Mabar event, it takes place primarily in Delera’s Graveyard.  When you enter Delera’s Graveyard, you get the opportunity to select your appropriate level range and then to encounter randomly spawned undead (or possibly shadar-ki depending on your level) just like the old Mabar event and similar to what you encounter in Smuggler’s Rest (although with Smuggler’s Rest you don’t get the opportunity to select your level range).  As you engage and defeat the undead you will get a chance to collect dark chocolates or a key.  The dark chocolates are used in the recipes for the various awards offered during the event while the keys allow you to enter one of four different Halloween themed quests (the same key is used for all four quests).

Delera’s Graveyard pretty much remains the same.

photo Making my way into Haverdashed_zpsrmf862cs.jpg

The spookiness of Haverdashed.

The addition of the four quests is one huge difference between the Night Revels and the old Mabar event.  You no longer have to unlock the summoning chamber and to fight the spectral dragon Misery to get all the ingredients you need for event rewards.  Instead, once you get a key, you can enter one of four different portals are positioned throughout Delera’s Graveyard.  Each portal leads to a different quest.  The quests are remakes of current quests but outfitted with a Halloween theme.  The “new” quests contain pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns throughout and you fight primarily undead versions of the usual mobs.  These new quests are called Haverdashed (from Haverdasher), Kobold’s Newest Ringleader (from Kobold’s New Ringleader), Under New Ravagement (Stand Your Ground), and The Snitch and the Lich (from the Snitch).  All of these remade quests are short, which is really nice, and they reward you with a different type of ingredient that is also used with the dark chocolates you received from Delera’s Graveyard for the event loot.  The longer quests have been shortened (the Snitch for instance doesn’t start out in the tavern but more into the middle of the quest) which is really nice.  Another thing of note, these Halloween themed quests are set up with the challenge technology so you can select what level to do them on.

photo Making my way into Under New Management_zpsdygn48f8.jpg

Erdrique noticing that the Statler brothers have decorated for Halloween in Under New Ravagement.

Now I was initially worried when I first entered Delera’s Graveyard because it didn’t take long for me to encounter some lag issues, which is one of the primary reasons Mabar was turned off for good.  However, the lag cleared up and I was able to continue my way through the event.  It didn’t take me very long at all to start gathering some dark chocolates and some keys.  On Friday night, I had a key within the first 10 minutes or so of running around Delera’s Graveyard.  I then ran Haverdashed and it took me all of four minutes to completed.  Another note worthy thing with this event when compared to Mabar, these quests hand out experience when they are completed, and it was a nice chunk of experience indeed.  I did the quests with Erdrique (Level 22 Rogue/Fury of the Wild), who was level 21 at the time, on level 21 and got 62,000 experience for each run.  The other quests took me from four to 15 minutes to complete.  And the one that took 15 minutes was because I took the time to break everything (Kobold’s Newest Ringleader).  This was a nice little surprise, as I wasn’t expecting to gather experience during the event and especially not over 240,000 experience.

 photo Yet another Lich_zpsaihlrqdu.jpg

Erdrique battling the lich at the end of the Snitch and the Lich.

The enemy spawn rate was just the same as I encountered previously with Mabar and I didn’t see any issues with that.  As I mentioned earlier, it was easy for me to obtain keys.  In fact, I ran three of the quests on Saturday morning prior to the event being triggered off and I had started to hunt down keys at around 8 am.  Overall, I like the redesign quite a bit.  I also like the addition of the new loot items and “keeping” of old Mabar items as well.  When thing I do wish that could have been done was somehow keeping Misery as a potential boss for one of these quests.  If I remember correctly, the bosses are either liches or vampires.  I think the boss in Haverdashed is a vampire while the other three have liches.  I also wish the same set up could be set up in the Necropolis, the other large graveyard in Stormreach.  Maybe that can be done in the future.

The Night Revels promises to be a fun event in the future.  I’m looking forward to it coming back out this week.  I have no idea how much I’ll run it, but I’ll definitely be taking my characters through it.  Thanks for reading everybody and happy hunting in Night Revels.
